FAQs

What is VizTreks?

VizTreks is a supplemental data literacy course for students in grades 4-8. It teaches users how to read, evaluate, and gain actionable insights from graphic displays of data. Its innovative design leverages the latest findings in educational research to promote deep data fluency and AI readiness.

How is it different from other learning resources?

Unlike existing curricula, VizTreks features more than 30 popular graphic formats, teaches four levels of graph comprehension and associated higher-order thinking skills, and motivates students with user-driven inquiry in a dynamic, immersive UX.

Is it designed for students with diverse learning needs?

VizTreks uses multimodal instruction to engage and support all students, including English language learners and students who have difficulty with reading fluency. Additional embedded supports include on-demand text, text-to-speech, and an illustrated glossary.

Is the course aligned to academic standards?

VizTreks learning outcomes are a synthesis of standards, frameworks, and policy guidelines from several fields: data science, mathematics, statistics, science, computer science, and media literacy.

The learning platform provides guidance for meeting specific state and national standards.

How are lessons structured?

Users have multiple experiences with each data visualization. The lessons feature explicit scaffolded instruction and guided practice, culminating in a formative assessment with immediate feedback.

As students work through each module, they’re introduced to increasingly complex mathematical concepts and graphic formats. This encourages persistence through productive struggle, which promotes overall achievement and a growth mindset.

How does VizTreks report student performance?

As users interact with course content, VizTreks collects data that provide a detailed view of student learning. Teachers can access real-time student and class reports to monitor performance and chart growth across data fluency and critical thinking in addition to discrete standards-based math skills.
